A good meta description does three things: it describes the page accurately, it includes the target keyword naturally, and it gives the reader a reason to click. Here's how to nail each one:
1. Include your target keyword
Google bolds matching words in the description when they match the search query. This makes your result stand out. Place the keyword naturally โ don't force it, but don't omit it either.
2. Match search intent
If someone searches "how to count words online", they want a tool โ not a history of word counting. Your description should immediately confirm that your page delivers what they need.
3. Add a clear benefit or action
Phrases like "free, no signup", "instant results", "in 30 seconds", or "works on mobile" give concrete reasons to choose your result over the others. Be specific โ vague descriptions get ignored.
4. Write for humans, not robots
Your description should read naturally. Avoid keyword stuffing โ it looks spammy and Google may rewrite it anyway. One clear sentence (or two short ones) is almost always better than a list of keywords.
5. Keep it unique for every page
